Kine Weekly said “The newest robust ‘crooks slip out’ are peopled which have a colourful assortment of important and you may arresting characters, and they, skilfully manipulated by the writer and manager, enable the film in order to tread h2o effectively. It is only into finish so it begins to falter, although smack-upwards finale rescues they regarding the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can smartly dialogued, it will have zero great challenge in traditions off their extremely ugly title.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin told you “The movie moves from the an easy rate, the talk are slick and characterisations basically active. Manhood Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes lead the fresh new shed skillfully, once the detective was played with considerable aplomb of the that person identification, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody regarding New Yorker listed “So it terse and tight flick noir was predicated on the latest close and you can elite group disputes of one’s label profile, the latest unlawful mastermind (starred from the Dick Powell) behind an elegant unlawful gambling establishment. The brand new film’s copywriter and manager, Robert Rossen, creates a beneficial multidimensional chess video game, for mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a great cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever cousin (Nina Foch) did at gambling establishment and you may dated an excellent corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic program, the newest cast’s suavely managed body gestures regarding like and you can threat, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may smartly cocky images (in addition to his governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really in depth spectacle a hidden vintage of the style.” [ 10 ]

Photo possess action and suspense, and you may certain brief meets out-of jokes to add style. Ace performances of the Knob Powell, due to the fact a betting home overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, as the a police inspector, including within the rating . As the spot observe a common pattern, the new characterizations are new as well as the shows good enough in order to overbalance. Dialogue was terse and you will topical, preventing the psychological, phoney touch. Unusual digital camera basics appear now and then so you’re able to escalate appeal and briefly arrest the attention. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing since the manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, unique blogger and you can associate music producer, together with helps with making this a delicate development.” [ 11 ]

It is mostly a question of enjoying Mr. Powell experience his paces smartly while a massive shed from actors and you can actresses bring your standard support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great absolutely nothing lady just who brings about brand new best in your and you will Ellen Drew is the sleek and you will slinky vixen exactly who will get your toward jams. Thomas Gomez try oily since villain and you will Lee J. Cobb do a separate able journey because a weary police inspector whom fundamentally closes the fact. A great amount of ingesting and you can puffing is done by the every alarmed.” [ several ]
